FOO FIGHTERS “TIMES LIKE THESE” | About Living Again

I, I’m a new day rising
I’m a brand new sky to hang the stars upon tonight
But I, I’m a little divided
Do I stay or run away and leave it all behind?

Hello and welcome to the Building A Memory. Here we care about music and their memories. Today I want to bring a song that was part of my teenage years and, this band’s influence in my life, is mostly because of my older brother, Matheus.

The Foo Fighters is a rock band that started, firstly, as a solo project by Nirvana’s former drummer and co-founder, Dave Grohl, not so long after Kurt Cobain’s body was found inside his home in Seattle. The first idea was to create a different picture from his former band and show the world what he could do. Well… for the self-titled album which was released in 1995, there’s a single person for every instrument, and now in 2021, the group formed by Rami Jaffee, Chris Shiflett, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear and, of course, Dave Grohl, have just released a new album: Medicine at Midnight.

But not everything was okay for the band. In 2002 the band almost ended for good (or bad, in this case), while they were having some internal affairs. This song was written even without knowing if they would come back. Time is clear for us: it’s the fourth track in the album “One By One”, a report on Dave Grohl’s feelings about missing the band, and a great message to everyone.

I, I’m a new day rising
I’m a brand new sky to hang the stars upon tonight
But I, I’m a little divided
Do I stay or run away and leave it all behind?

Every day we wake up it’s a new day. A day we don’t know if it’ll work or not. We can make the best to be a perfect day. The plans, the schedules, the dreams… everything is aligned, but you aren’t sure if that’s what you really want for life.

What can surprise you? Are you happy with what you’ve got in your hands right now?

Sometimes I’ve got this feeling of leaving everything behind and start something brand new, even loving what I’ve been doing for the last decade and where I’ve been living. I really don’t know what is going on my mind, but there’s a calling which may help.

It's times like these you learn to live again
It's times like these you give and give again
It's times like these you learn to love again
It's times like these time and time again

Every day is a different fight. Every day is a chance to learn new things. If you don’t grasp what is coming to you, there are low chances of experiencing the best life has to offer. It’s a process of learning, giving, and loving.

Last week, the principal in the school I teach, professor Lylcoln Carneiro, passed away. In the chats we sometimes had, he mentioned about living again, enjoying time, and learning new things. He surely grasped what was in his hands, a graduated in Engineering taking care of a school, who was always learning new things and motivating his employees and teaching staff to do the same. There was always a smile on his face, and he was always saying “good morning, teacher” to everyone he saw walking the halls.

Time is in your hands. You never know when it’ll slip through your fingers. Stop it now and say “I love you” for those near you. Learn to forgive. Learn to live together. If you’ve got the chance to reinvent yourself, do it. Sometimes there will be “times like these”, sometimes there won’t.

THE REIGN OF KINDO “COMFORT IN THE ORCHESTRATION” | On being in control of your life

One day you're certain of how things will be
Then you're bewildered
And robbed of your glee

Hello and welcome to the Building A Memory. Here we care about music and their memories. Today I want to bring a song from one of my favourite bands that I already mentioned here. I made a video and text recommending this band’s first album. You can check it out later and understand why they changed my musical life.

A short reminder of who they are. The Reign of Kindo comes from the USA and they play something varying from rock to jazz. Their vocals are soothing and touching, and the lyrics talk about life (and its stages) and feelings we have towards a subject, like injustice, pop music, happiness, or sadness. The instrumentals sometimes are simple and sometimes not. Everything is sharp and precise, as it needs to be. Today’s song talks about life as a stage play.

One day you're certain of how things will be
Then you're bewildered
And robbed of your glee

Every single person in the world has lived their life in a total surprised way. Even though plans are made, dreams are dreamt, there’s always that unexpected event happening which takes us from our traced route and, quite often, make us bewildered.

As the curtains are drawn
The stage of your life revealed
But the script is now gone

Having that “to-do list” all messed up is complicated, but it isn’t the end of the world. Me, as a teacher, when my class takes a different route from what I planned, if I sit down and cry, students will flip out and neither sides will be benefited. Students won’t learn and probably I’ll be fired. The solution, sometimes, is learning how to improvise.

This is much less like a play and more like a grand ball

Differently from a sport or videogame, in life we can’t practice what we are going to do. Things need to happen, and you need to act.  There’s no time to think if you want to dance along with the others: you’ve got to step forward and make the move.

Of course, I’m not saying here you’ve got to let life take you wherever the wind blows. Plans and dreams need to be written or thought about. The difference is: if you get unprepared for what happens next, do not freak out. Regardless the situation, we’ve got the ability to handle it (sometimes flawlessly, sometimes not).

This is what happens when you realize you're not in control
Some days you'll bear the load
And others you won't

Finally, all our dreams and desires may be scripted, but we aren’t in full control of our lives. The “unplanned” will surely hit you. Some days it’ll be easier to carry on. Some days it won’t, and when this happens, take a time for yourself. Breathe in, relax, and try one more time. Just, please, don’t let it sink you into a deeper hole of sadness that you can’t get out. In any case of this happening, understand that there are friends and professionals ready to help you finding your way out of it.
