                Hello and welcome to the Building A Memory. Here we care about music and their memories. Today’s song was a request made by my cousin, Pedro Duarte, even before the blog had this YouTube channel.

                “Of Mice and Men” is a Californian band which takes the book of same name, by John Steinbeck, as inspiration. The same has inspired some lyrics. Today’s song discussion embraces personal feelings and, sometimes, may be related to grieving someone. 

Take away all of this emptiness I feel

Cause I will never find another you 

                During this pandemic we’ve been living in since 2019/2020, it’s been even more difficult to know someone who hasn’t lost somebody who was loved. Maybe it was because of this virus which is plaguing or any other cause. It’s always sad to lose somebody and to feel that emptiness knocking at our doors. 

I still hear you in this house (whispering)

I still feel you in my bones (in these veins)

And like the portraits in the halls (can’t help but think)

I wish you were staring back at me (but you’re gone) 

                Many things may remind you of your loved ones and there won’t be another to substitute them. It’s okay to feel like that because you cared about this person and we were never meant to die (that was God’s original plan), so this is why losing someone hurts a lot. 

So I’ll carry you with me in my dreams, my memory

So I’ll carry you with me, you’ll always be in my memory 

                Remember the good times you’ve lived with your loved ones. Carry them in your heart, memories, and dreams.

DELIRIOUS? “KINGDOM OF COMFORT” | We don’t live in a kingdom of comfort

 

Few bands are as consistent as the “Delirious?” are. A British Christian worship/pop/rock group that started in the early 90s and announced their retirement in 2009. They were always true to what they sang. Even being a Christian band, their lyrics weren’t only focused on the “Jesus’ way”, because a life of examples, most of the time, speaks louder than words.

Their last studio album idea, “Kingdom of Comfort”, came after some visits they made to India and to the African continent. It’s an invitation and a challenge to us all, Christian or not, regardless our beliefs, to change our habits.

These are the words starting this album: a cry for help. We all know that everything we conquer in this perished world won’t follow us when we pass away. One of the most provoking songs ever written, because we tend to accumulate things without thinking about the consequences (I mentioned something resembling this in the blog post and video of the song “PERSONAL SHOPPER”).

You also find songs teaching what love is, songs that call social responsibility, and, being a Christian band, songs worshipping and showing God’s love, even when everything in life is difficult. You see lyrics like:

Injustice, poverty, inequality… we’re surrounded by this. Sometimes there’s this question looming in the air “where’s God in all of this?”, and I answer: He’s in the hope inside the hearts and in the actions of those who try to make a better world, in which the human being itself brings destruction and evil.

The songs I mentioned earlier are my favourite in the album, as they are played, but the full album is a masterpiece. It’s like a Christian version of Radiohead mixed with U2, but with their own and strong characteristics.

BLITZ “VOCÊ NÃO SOUBE ME AMAR” | (Un)Matched Love

 

 “In the beginning, everything was beautiful. Everything is divine. It was wonderful.”

            Hello and welcome to the Building A Memory. Here we care about music and their memories. Today I’m bringing a reflection that was a request done by Tiago Melo Jucá in “DC Talk – Colored People” video.

            This song came and made some historical changes in Brazilian music during the 80s which, until that moment, was hampered and stuck to military dictatorship’s restrictions imposed to artists. The main changes were bringing irreverence and fun to the lyrics, the rock as media highlight once again and, as consequence, open the doors for bands like Paralamas do Sucesso, Legião Urbana, Ultraje a Rigor, Barão Vermelho, Titãs, and others.

            Although the irreverence and fun this song brings, we can surely take a reflection.

“In the beginning, everything was beautiful. Everything is divine. It was wonderful.”

            The story is, for short, a juvenile loving saga. That “cute” love which everybody looks and say that everything will work out. “La vie en rose” is vivid: honey here, babe there... But life demands responsibilities for you and for the other side.

“Suddenly, we got mad. I said it was here, she said it was me.”

            Unfortunately, many believe and hope that their own happiness is tied to the other side, and that is unreal. First, you’ve got to be okay with yourself so that, finally, you can make the other happy. Also, it’s important to remember that both sides have got needs and, if they weren’t voiced, bigger problems pile up with time.

            The book “Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life” (Marshall Rosenberg), which I’ve been reading these last days, is showing many examples of these situations. Communication, besides being a key-element for a good personal or professional sociability, it needs to be correctly expressed so neither sides get upset and, with this, the relationship ends.

            The fault, quite often, isn’t in the other but in ourselves. It’s just like what my mother always told me: don’t expect from the other what he or she doesn’t have to offer.

“You didn’t know how to love me.”

            Unfortunately, life has this fashion of bringing delusions and, oftentimes, we blame the other side for not corresponding to our feelings. The song itself, in its last chorus, show both characters blaming each other. Have you ever thought that, maybe, you’re the one not loving yourself, or that your actions repel you from the people you want to get involved? I’ve lived both situations.

            But there is someone who will never let you down with the love He has to offer, because it’s the only pure and perfect love. This love comes from God. Although human race has warded in their desire to fulfil wishes and selfish feelings, He sent His only son to bring redemption.

            And, if you ever felt disappointed with God, you surely were looking to the wrong side, because the True God brings love, peace, and solace, even when everything is hard. He won’t spoil you and fulfil all your wishes like genius in a lamp, but peace to the heart amidst the chaos, that is more than sure.
