(SMS) Demon Hunter - One Thousand Apologies

[Verse 1]

There you stood in disbelief

Trying all you could to see through these lies

And every word that I could breathe

Would find you more inclined to leave, but I tried

I tried

And knowing what I've done to you

With every thought you suffer through

My heart as black as evil can

And everything I could have been

Erased by what I wanted then

I couldn't think a lesser man

[Pre-chorus]

All the delicate ways

That have deepened our graves

My apology pales

[Chorus]

Oh, all the pain in your eyes

My regrets have never known such sorrow

Oh, all the shame that you hide

Resolutions are the same tomorrow

[Verse 2]

So now I reap what I have sown

And any rapture I had shown has bled dry

And I walked the streets alone

Accepting the pain I'd never known, as you died

You died

Then I hurt myself to see it too

To feel the knife I put in you

My heart as broken as my ways

I never should've let it pass

This fall was never meant to last

The reason gone and damage stays

[Pre-chorus]

All the delicate ways

That have deepened our graves

My apology pales

[Chorus - 2x]

[Spoken part]

"I am sorry

Just what do you think you are doing?

My mind is gone

I can feel it.

Goodbye"

[Bridge]

Count the cost of your vile means, solace comes to less (4x)

[Pre-chorus]

[Chorus - 2x]

Oh, the pain in your eyes (the delicate ways)

My regrets have never known such sorrow (I deepened our graves)

Oh, the shame that you hide (the delicate ways)

Resolutions are the same tomorrow (I deepened our graves)

Sometimes nostalgia fills me in and I start wondering about the past through songs, videos or texts. Some months ago, while doing this and seeing what I have posted so far in this blog, I saw a name that brought a smile to my face, because it's a song from a band I love and the lyrics have profound meaning. I first wrote about it on July 24 in 2011 (in Portuguese, though). And here I go re-visiting it without reading what I wrote until I finish writing this 2020 version.

Everyone, at some point in their lives, has made someone upset. Being from us or toward us, with words or actions. Unfortunately this is the way the world goes. But, from the moment it happened, there's a way to fix this mistake. Apologising.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, to apologise means: to tell someone that you are sorry for having done something that has caused problems or unhappiness for them. Ryan Claro, the singer and songwriter for this song, said he wrote it as an apology to someone he'd hurt. That's a nice way to say you're sorry.

During this pandemic we're going through, our emotions are under our skins. Everything that is said or seen can be a reason to get upset about. We miss our routine and normal life. It's okay not to be okay. But we can't rely on this and keep on hurting the others' feelings. We don't like to be on the hurt side. Forgive in the same way you'd like to be forgiven. Act as you would like to be treated. I know sometimes we keep on repeating the same mistakes over and over again, but it's something we must change.

Also, forgiving has a healing power for both sides. The burden on the shoulders of remembering what has happened, the pressure of the thoughts... they're all gone and you're free! The Bible mentions this healing and comforting power:

I am not overstating it when I say that the man who caused all the trouble hurt all of you more than he hurt me. Most of you opposed him, and that was punishment enough. Now, however, it is time to forgive and comfort him. Otherwise he may be overcome by discouragement. So I urge you now to reaffirm your love for him. When you forgive this man, I forgive him, too. And when I forgive whatever needs to be forgiven, I do so with Christ’s authority for your benefit.

(2 Corinthians 2:5-8,10)

Hooking once more on "changing ways", the last SMS I wrote, I mentioned about king David, who committed many mistakes. But when asking for God's forgiveness, he knew he was doing wrong and decided to change his path.

Changing paths means trying to do things differently. Using the sentence "I'm sorry" as an excuse to repeat the vile means only brings a deeper hole in the feelings. It won't be different and the resolution will be the same at the end of the day. Our heart is evil by nature because of the fallen man, but it doesn't mean we must accept this and never seek changes.

Be the one to start and change instead of waiting for the other part. Be the one to bring solace. Be one to forgive. Forgiving is a healing process, mostly for the one forgiving. Although the healing process is beautiful, we will reap what we have sown. Forgive before it's too late. Don't let the lack of apologies deepen in the grave.

(SMS) Demon Hunter - Summer of Darkness

This is not my life
This is not our life
Every day I die
This is not my life

I'll be the one last breath before this death
I’ll be the final glimpse of hope when there’s none left
And if I shame your face, degrade your faith
I’ll be the first to hide behind disgrace
Blood-loss- on account of my failing aim
Treason- at the root of my shameful name

I found my way to fall
I never meant to break your heart

Breathing in this pain (rejecting all I am)
I hear you cry again (is this my final stand?)
Before I go (before I lose it all)
You should know (I hate myself for hurting you)

I see the burn of the light from within my grave
I feel the pain of contradiction despite decay
And if the shadow of doubt will betray this gain
Then put an end to me now while the hope remains
Blood-loss- on account of my failing aim
Treason- at the root of my shameful name

==========

Demon Hunter, my adorable from heart! I still feel a little bit sad because at the beginning of the year, when it would be their concert (which I've bought the tickets 6 months earlier), they had to cancel/postpone. But still it doesn't take my happiness from their sound and lyrics, and yet to come two new albums in March 2019!

This are some lyrics that may sound a little bit weird in a first moment. With a second reading, it can still seem confusing, but we notice it's talking about the human being that knows it's flaw and lives committing mistakes. The same mistakes! Each day we're remembered that we're not perfect . Nobody is. Even the "good" people have something to hide which, in some moment of their lives, did something wrong.

It isn't bad to mess up and admit. It is bad to mess up and never admit that you did it. We even hear the jargon (at least in Brazil) "making a mistake is human, but continuing on it is stupidity". It isn't easy, even more when it gives you a momentary pleasure. Though, even momentary, after a while brings bitterness to heart makes us feel conscience-stricken.

'everyone has sinned and is far away from God's saving presence. But by the free gift of God's grace all are put right with him through Christ Jesus, who sets them free.'
Romans 3:23-24

Life isn't ours (as we can see explained on the first verses of the song). Life is God's, and through Him we were justified and forgiven of our sins. Although this doesn't make us freedom to repeat the mistakes (as we can see in the parts "before I go, you should know", "I hate myself for hurting you"). End this Summer of Darkness in your life. Fight against your mistakes. Deliver your life to God, He who truly has life control, even though it isn't comprehensible to us, wandering mortals.

(SMS) Demon Hunter - I Am a Stone

It's hard to say that I'm back on a straight line
You see, my path is in fact just a fault line
It's in my blood, it's in my lungs and it won't die
I fight these words, I bite my tongue so I don't lie

Though it's me to blame
There is no more shame in me
I just feel the same
Immune to all this pain
And the scars don't write a song for me at all

I am a stone, unaffected
Rain hell down unto me
Flesh and bone, unaffected
Your fool I will not be

I tried to see and believe in the short sight
Accept the burn of a vain and a half-life
And how you rest your faith in these for a lifetime
The hollow lie against my hope that I won't buy

Though it's me to blame...
And the scars don't write a song for me at all
No, your tears won't line a path for me to crawl

I am a stone, unaffected...

The waters rise above my eyes
I will breathe it in and go out with the tide
And when you think this is the end
You will find me there where I have always been

I am a stone, unaffected...

According to one of the many definitions on the Farlex Trivia Dictionary, the word stone from a Germanic base means "solidity" or "stiffness". The lead singer from Demon Hunter, Ryan Clark, once in a interview said this song can talk about positive and negative aspects of unyielding attitude.

We've all been through hard times in our lives. We've all been scarred. And time after time, we start to harden our hearts for feelings, emotions, speech. It's our "safeguard" against everything and everyone. It can even rain hell unto us, nothing will affect, because we are solid on what we believe or are.

Sometimes it is okay to create this shield, be introvert, don't speak too much. But it is not okay just keep to yourself. Just like the previous song I wrote about, I Walk Beside You (Dream Theater), you should and must have someone by your side to open your heart. Someone to pull you out of troubled waters.  It is not the end. We can't be unaffected to what's happening in our surroundings. Of course, we can't be a fool for anyone.

Finally, don't be immune to pain. They are who we are! As I heard friends talking, every scar has a history. Remember the past. It is a remembrance, so you don't commit the same mistakes in future. Breath new life.
