K7 #019 - Go, Brazil!

Last Monday (September 7), here in Brazil, we had one of our major holidays: the Independence Day. Though surrounded with some controversies, we no longer need to pay tributes to Portugal, but this is something to be discussed in another topic.

For this week I want to honour my country by choosing bands that are from here and sing in Portuguese! I know I have already made a playlist similar to this subject, but differently, it won't be only "deboinha" as the other.

So, here are some Brazilian bands that rock!

K7 #018 - Change of Attitude

Every person in this world, since the moment is born, goes through changes: physical, behaviour and emotions. Babies, children, teenagers, adults, elders... a long lifecycle we'll all live.

Throughout those stages, many things can happen and we may act in a good or bad way. Our actions mould how people look to us and how we inspire those who took us as reference. And by just living, we are challenged to change, being it for better or for worse.

Music is one of the many ways to teach us different subjects, including behaviour. And that's what my brother said when I asked him what could I do as playlist: changing of ways. He also put an extra sauce by telling me to not choose any Christian songs. As reference, he mentioned the song Dare You To Move, by the band Switchfoot.

All the songs here provoke a turning point. Changing is good and can turn one into a better being.

K7 #017 Underrated Artists #02

Continuing the playlist I started on May 23, 2020, I bring you once again bands/artists that don't have enough recognition. Well, at least neither in the social circles I live in, nor online, and I don't see many people talking about them.

Although some names are from famous bands, I don't find many comments on their side-projects. Also, there's a personal friend of mine in this list. You should definitely check him out: Pedro.

K7 #016 - Plagiarism?

Some years ago I lectured an English conversation class where the subject was "Plagiarism or Inspiration?". I've approached with my students some artistic paintings and even songs. What is the limit of being considered inspiration or plagiarism? Being proved the plagiarism, is there any need to go to court? It was a nice class in which the one-hour set extrapolated.

Remembering this, on June 22 I commented in the group that reviews the texts about this idea. They even reminded me of some videos, like the one from Pipocando Música. When I was ready to make my research, I noticed Steve Terreberry, better known as Stevie T, released a video talking about the same subject. This video came out July 11.

The list he put in was so surprising (I only knew half the cases) that I decided to use all the songs he mentioned. The first name accused the second, but not necessarily won the trial. The only ones who are not in this list are the ones who open this list, which was a funny case that happened in Brazil back in 2011, which was broadcasted in Jornal da Noite, a famous end-of-the-day news program, and Kiko Loureiro, one of the involved in the case, told the story (English subbed). I couldn't find the accused version in the audio-streaming platforms, but you can listen to it here.

K7 #015 - For Movies

If you'd invite me to watch movies, I'd probably ask to do something else. I do like movies, but it's not my thing to keep binge-watching them. I watch it when I'm in the mood.

But one thing I can assure: the best movies I've watched surely had some great soundtracks. Music is the soul of a movie. It can be pre-existent or specially composed.

We usually see original pieces being performed by an orchestra, but sometimes an artist or band write a song exclusively for a film. And that's today's subject: songs specially composed for movies. They might have appeared in future collections of the artist, but at that time, it was for and only the movie. I may have watched it or not. You guess hahaha.

K7 #14 Featuring

Music is the most sublime manifestation of art. It's the universal language which connects people all around the world. Some songs we may even hum though not remembering the lyrics. We tap our feet to its rhythm, even if we don't like what is being played in the background.

We listen to some artists because we like their musical genre or because the lyrics relate to ourselves. Sometimes the artists want to go one step further of their usual and invite some people to participate in a song or even an album. These invitations may overcome music genres or not, which can result in expected collaborations as well as truly surprising ones.

In this playlist we'll be listening to artists that were featured in songs from other artists. The filename may not show who's featuring, so I'm putting all of them down below.

K7 #013 - One-hit Wonders

A one-hit wonder is a musical artist who is successful with one hit song, but without a comparable subsequent hit. The term may also be applied to an artist who is remembered for only one hit despite other successes.

This is the definition posted on Wikipedia of what is a "one-hit wonder". It doesn't mean the artist doesn't have other famous or great songs, the fact is that one caught more of the media's attention.

With this said, here are some hits that have travelled the world in its many decades.

K7 #011 - Brazil "deboinha"

Brazil is a country of huge musical diversity, one of them is on music. We have Samba, Bossa Nova, Tropicália, Chorinho, Caipira, etc. Brazil was also influenced by genres from another countries. Nevertheless, Brazilian music isn't something that I seek to listen on my own, although I know some stuff.

These last days I've been helping my sister with the texts she's publishing along with her videos to promote her job as a Physical Education teacher. In this chat, I asked her to challenge me in a playlist subject, which the word she described: Brazilian "deboinha" songs. "Deboinha" is a slang that can mean easy-going or nice.

In the same chat I've tested the limits of how pumped it could be, because when she says "deboinha" she doesn't want any living being having his/her throat purged while singing. My limit was definied and it became easier to choose the songs. Actually not so much, for when I thought I had 30 minutes of songs remaining to fill the 1 hour list.

Finally, here are the Brazilian songs, sung in Portuguese, limited by one per artist, that are "deboinha".
