                Hello and welcome to the Building A Memory. Here we care about music and their memories. Today’s song was a request made by my cousin, Pedro Duarte, even before the blog had this YouTube channel.

                “Of Mice and Men” is a Californian band which takes the book of same name, by John Steinbeck, as inspiration. The same has inspired some lyrics. Today’s song discussion embraces personal feelings and, sometimes, may be related to grieving someone. 

Take away all of this emptiness I feel

Cause I will never find another you 

                During this pandemic we’ve been living in since 2019/2020, it’s been even more difficult to know someone who hasn’t lost somebody who was loved. Maybe it was because of this virus which is plaguing or any other cause. It’s always sad to lose somebody and to feel that emptiness knocking at our doors. 

I still hear you in this house (whispering)

I still feel you in my bones (in these veins)

And like the portraits in the halls (can’t help but think)

I wish you were staring back at me (but you’re gone) 

                Many things may remind you of your loved ones and there won’t be another to substitute them. It’s okay to feel like that because you cared about this person and we were never meant to die (that was God’s original plan), so this is why losing someone hurts a lot. 

So I’ll carry you with me in my dreams, my memory

So I’ll carry you with me, you’ll always be in my memory 

                Remember the good times you’ve lived with your loved ones. Carry them in your heart, memories, and dreams.

Hello and welcome to the Building A Memory. Here we care about music and their memories. Today I want to bring a song from a band that pretty much shaped what heavy metal looks like. Also, I was inspired by a text I read in the blog “Cristianismo e Underground” written by Edy Marques. You can find the link in the description.

Black Sabbath is a British band that started in the end of the 60s and, with their sound, they’ve scared some people to the point of being considered Satanists. Today’s song, in particular, uses the “diabolus in musica”, which is a musical interval encompassed by three consecutive whole steps, and better known as tritone, that was considered evil during the medieval times and its usage was forbidden during that time.  The tritone was disliked because of its grating quality, which goes against the traditional purpose of music: harmony and beauty.

As we shall see, they do talk about the existence of a spiritual world but with a warning of dealing with the evil.

 

What is this that stands before me?

At some point in their lives, everyone has got in contact with a religion. Every religion, in some way, has something related to the spiritual world. The spiritual world is, basically, divided in two antagonistic sides: good and evil. I, as a professed Christian who attends the Presbyterian Church in Brazil, believe from the bottom of my soul in this existence.

Satan is real and he’s ready to tempt anyone who’s open-hearted to evil deeds. Although we all are sinners and far from perfection (we’re always making mistakes), believing and seeking for Jesus’s salvation and forgiveness, and pursuing a change of ways, is what distinguishes good from evil. If we don’t seek a transformation of life, we’ll be haunted.

                If we don’t want to be haunted by the evil, we must repent from our sins and keep on asking God for help. He’s the only one able to alleviate our hearts and give us strength to carry on even when everything is difficult and complicated. That’s what Jesus said:

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome this world.” John 16.33

Satan’s coming ‘round the bend
People running ‘cause they’re scared
The people better go and beware
No, no please, no

 

                It is never too late to seek God and find redemption. Do it now before it’s too late.
