ERIC CLAYTON “A THOUSAND SCARS” | On resurfacing and showing love

Some artists appear in our lives to bring and make difference. Eric Clayton was one of them for me when his former and original band, “Saviour Machine”, was first presented to me. His remarkable voice and provoking lyrics were always a differential until, after the release of “Legend III:I” (2001), he disappeared. A disc named “Legend III:II” popped up in 2011 although the band don’t recognise it as official, since they only started recording but have never actually finished it, and ended up considered just as incomplete demo tracks, recorded in studio and released without the band’s approval.

New information was released to the public about him around August in 2011, precisely to comment on this “unfinished album’s case”, but no original content was out until the one from 2020, when Eric Clayton returned announcing an album of new songs... and what a wonderful album! This which starts saying that love can exist even if there are barriers, and that we must fight to surpass them. It is the single which announced the album, and the song couldn’t have come at a better moment, for the global pandemic was at its peak in 2020 in many countries.

Following-up, Eric Clayton tells us a little of his own history, that is, his personal problems and how, in a certain way, he did manage to overcome them. It’s the concrete representation from the “Thousand Scars”, as the album title suggests, since scars are remembrance of the pains we’ve been through but marked so we never forget and become better human beings.

It’s possible to connect with Eric while he sings:

·         The Space Between Us

In the space between us there is love, there is light. In the distance, it speaks to us, it reaches us, dancing in the night.

·         In The Lines

It’s all in the lines of the fateful receiver. It’s all in the mind of the pain and the healer. It’s all in the eyes of the faithless believer. It’s all of our lies… It’s all of our lives in the lines.

·         Chasing Monsters

I’m frightened when the sadness calls my name. I’m trapped inside the pain of fear and rage. I’m hanging on for mercy, I’m praying. As I cling to the stage… my scars remain.

·         American Whore

Tear down the vacant messiah, the fallen nation in rust. Burn down the sacred asylum in lust. They sold us out, they sold “in god we trust”
(reference to the sentence in the American banknote)

·         The Greatest of These

Love… love is a whisper, not a shout… not a shout. Hear… hear in my voice, as it rejoices in the sound.

It’s lyrics like these that make us feel closer to who’s singing. A bitter history that turns into hope, as we can listen on the last song:

“Love is the healer, love is the light. Love is in everything, everything right. Love isn’t hateful, love isn’t  blind. Love shall remain, love will survive. Love is alive.”
