K7  #002 - Metal Bands of My Life

I've been talking to my cousin Ivan recently, someone a little bit peculiar, one of the most excited (and overacted) when the subject is music. Once I thought someone had died by the amount of messages by seconds he had sent. A nice being and with a big heart.

Taking advantage of this excitement of his, I asked a suggestion of theme, and exaggerated as he is, he showed me a playlist with the best metal bands of his life. A playlist with more than 100 hours of songs and, according to him, if he'd put all bands, it'd be a year. The suggestion was exactly making one with the best metal bands of my life. I won't make a 100-hour playlist because the idea of K7 is having 1 hour of songs.

So here are the best metal bands of my life with songs that made difference in me (and are in the streaming platforms).

K7 #001 - Memories

"Memory: faculty of retaining ideas, sensations, impressions, previously acquired."

If you ever stopped to read the blog's headline, it is exactly what is written right below the name. Each of us possess our own memories and choose sharing them or not.

I'm from the time of cassette (K7) tape. I have memories of creating playlists for my family's trips. The tapes had about 60 minutes of song, being 30 each side.

Not so distant of this, I intend to make a thematic playlist bimonthly, if I don't face any setback, that will be announced on the blog, Facebook and Instagram's page, and also on the Telegram's channel. I'll be even asking some suggestions on songs and/or themes Instagram's stories.

And since the K7 tape nostalgia and memory were mentioned, nothing like the first theme be songs that talk about MEMORIES.

(SMS) Imagine Dragons - Believer

[Verse 1]
First things first
I'ma say all the words inside my head
I'm fired up and tired of the way that things have been, oh-ooh
The way that things have been, oh-ooh
Second thing second
Don't you tell me what you think that I could be
I'm the one at the sail, I'm the master of my sea, oh-ooh
The master of my sea, oh-ooh

[Pre-Chorus]
I was broken from a young age
Taking my sulkin' to the masses
Writing my poems for the few
That look at me, took to me, shook at me, feelin' me
Singing from heartache from the pain
Taking my message from the veins
Speaking my lesson from the brain
Seeing the beauty through the...

[Chorus]
Pain! You made me a, you made me a believer, believer
Pain! You break me down and build me up, believer, believer
Pain! Oh, let the bullets fly, oh, let them rain
My life, my love, my drive, it came from...
Pain! You made me a, you made me a believer, believer

[Verse 2]
Third things third
Send a prayer to the ones up above
All the hate that you've heard has turned your spirit to a dove, oh-ooh
Your spirit up above, oh-ooh

[Pre-Chorus]
I was chokin' in the crowd
Building my rain up in the cloud
Falling like ashes to the ground
Hoping my feelings, they would drown
But they never did, ever lived, ebbin' and flowin'
Inhibited, limited 'til it broke open and rained down
It rained down, like...

[Chorus]
Pain! You made me a, you made me a believer, believer
Pain! You break me down and build me up, believer, believer
Pain! Oh, let the bullets fly, oh, let them rain
My life, my love, my drive, it came from...
Pain! You made me a, you made me a believer, believer

[Bridge]
Last things last
By the grace of the fire and the flames
You're the face of the future, the blood in my veins, oh-ooh
The blood in my veins, oh-ooh
But they never did, ever lived, ebbin' and flowin'
Inhibited, limited 'til it broke open and rained down
It rained down, like...

[Chorus]
Pain! You made me a, you made me a believer, believer
Pain! You break me down and build me up, believer, believer
Pain! Oh, let the bullets fly, oh, let them rain
My life, my love, my drive, it came from...
Pain! You made me a, you made me a believer, believer

This end of the year at the school I teach we had a musical activity to conclude the school year, named Bate-Lata (which can be translated to something like “Hitting the Can”). It was the eighth edition, but my first as a participant. The musicality teacher asked me to play the guitar and help the children with English songs. One of the songs they were having some trouble was this, Believer, mainly because of the pre-chorus. I’ve learnt the whole song, sung with them, and because of learning, the lyrics caught my attention.

Our 2019 wasn’t a very easy year. Many deaths were shown by social media, the high stunning of prices, psychosomatic diseases showing up even more. Living is getting harder.

It is not a new subject I bring to Building a Memory (the Portuguese version of Construindo Uma Memória), though some changes in the format since 2011. I was shaped by the fire. I’ve been through many difficulties in my life that changed me with the passing of time, but I also haven’t forgotten my personal references,  like family, friends and teachers. I also resorted a lot, and mainly, to God, who always talked to me in a different way. I listen to His voice by reading and, mainly, through music (one of the reasons why I write about it).

One Brazilian popular saying is “God helps those who wake up in the early morning”. God can help you for sure, but we have to make our part. It is time to transform our pain into strength. The tears into water watering the soil of our dreams and achievements. But don’t let being consumed. Don’t let on seeking help. And if necessary, search a psychologist.

Be someone who believes not only in yourself but also in the future generation, because they’ll look to us as reference.

(SMS) P.O.D. - Alive

Originally posted on November 8, 2017.

'hope' Woman Portrait is a painting by Svetlana Novikova which was uploaded on May 7th, 2011.

Everyday is a new day
I'm thankful for every breath I take
I won't take it for granted
So I learn from my mistakes

It's beyond my control, sometimes it's best to let go
Whatever happens in this lifetime
So I trust in love
You have given me peace of mind

Payable on Death, or simple P.O.D.... A band that was part of my childhood and youth. That mix between metal with a little bit of rap, what was a trend during the end of 90s and beginning of 00s, known as Nu/New Metal, where bands like Linkin Park, KoRn, and Limp Bizkit characterised the genre. P.O.D. is a band that always knew who to reinvent with the passing of the years without losing its characteristics (there's a new album coming out there ).

There's nothing like being alive. Nothing like being able to breath (even sometimes having stuffy nose 😝)!!! Every day we have a gift: life. According to a biological definition of this gift of ours is: "the sequence of physical and mental experiences that constitute the existence of a being."

We exist, live, experience, mess up, cry, rejoice, celebrate… Many emotions and perceptions that is kind of complicated putting everything to words. They are never the same reactions even though they've been through the same situations. What we are up to do is to face what is coming towards us. Accepting what is given us as challenge and trying to win. It is believing that is possible to not give up. It is know that there are people who love us and bring us peace of mind. It is understanding that God takes care of us even if we are disobedient and, because of that, suffer the consequences, like what happens to a child when he/she disobeys its parents.

And as the chorus of the song says: "I feel so alive for the very first time", and may each day be a new day, like the very first time, idead that is also very clear in the original videoclip.

(SMS) Iron Maiden - Tears of a Clown

Tomorrow comes, tomorrow goes
But the cloud remains the same
Wonder why he’s feeling down
Tears of a clown
Maybe it’s all just for the best
Lay his weary head to rest
Was forever feeling drowned
Tears of a clown

Who motivates the motivator?
Facade it has to go
He knows, it sooner or later
Smile for cameras, all okay
But tomorrow is another day, he must get through

At the same this song is beautiful, it is sad. Both Bruce Dickinson and Steve Harris admitted it was inspired in Robin Williams, a clown that brought many laughs in our lives during the 90s and 00s and, unfortunately, committed suicide because a deep depression crisis.

I'm not much connected with people's death that are not in my daily basis living, though I grief for a life that was lost and could have done much more, and this was one I got really upset. Probably because he brought joy to my life with many awesome characters!!!

It's funny how sadness hits even the motivators. We saw something similar this year with Chester, Linkin Park's former singer, who sang about how to overcome your demons, and he's gone with one of them.

Don't ever hesitate into opening your heart to people surrounding you. Take your masks out. Be your true you. And, if you're one who is always motivating, seek someone to be your confidante!! You are also human, and you need help as well. And, if you've got a friend that is always motivating, take care of him or her. Sometimes sadness hits it and, for being a person with motivational messages, he/she is afraid of opening the heart.

(SMS) Alter Bridge - Blackbird

[Verse 1]
The willow it weeps today
A breeze from the distance is calling your name
Unfurl your black wings and wait
Across the horizon it's coming to sweep you away
It's coming to sweep you away

[Chorus]
Let the wind carry you home
Blackbird, fly away
May you never be broken again

[Verse 2]
The fragile cannot endure
The wrecked and the jaded, a place so impure
The static of this cruel world
Cause some birds to fly long before they've seen their day
Long before they've seen their day

[Chorus]
Let the wind carry you home
Blackbird, fly away
May you never be broken again
Beyond the suffering you've known
I hope you find your way
May you never be broken again

[Bridge]
Ascend may you find no resistance
Know that you made such a difference
All you leave behind will live to the end
The cycle of suffering goes on
But memories of you stay strong
Someday I too will fly and find you again

[Guitar Solo]

[Chorus]
Let the wind carry you home
Blackbird fly away
May you never be broken again
Beyond the suffering you've known
I hope you find your way
May you never be broken again
May you never be broken again

I must confess that I had some prejudice on Alter Bridge because I’m not into Myles Kennedy voice. For musical knowledge I’ve started listening one of the albums I most heard about, which is the same as this song’s… how fool I was. I’ve lost some precious music out there, and while listening the whole album, when the chorus of this one started, they had all my attention.

There’s a rumour this song is about a Myles Kennedy’s friend that died during the album writing process, and it’s kind of a homage to him. I’m pretty sure they had some good time together, otherwise this song wouldn’t have come out.

Well… we all, sometime in our lives, lost someone we dearly loved. Someone that we wished just some more seconds with him or her just to say “I love you”. We may even think that they didn’t live or enjoyed life to its full. Indeed, we live in a cruel world that take the ones that apparently did not deserve to die. They probably had a fast and non-painful death, or they suffered more than we could imagine. One thing in all of this is certain: they don’t suffer anymore. There is no more pain.

I’ve finished recently to read the book “The Dreamseller: The Calling” by Augusto Cury, and in the first half of the book, the main character goes to a funeral and speaks about death. We mourn and weep,  but we don’t keep his or her memories alive. We should keep them alive in our hearts, remembering all good things they had done while alive. The body may be dead, but the spirit lives on and should inspire us to keep on living.

We will surely die someday. How do you want to be remembered? Death is not the last step. There is eternal life. Which side are you going to: heaven or hell? If you want to go to heaven, remember that not only good deeds lead you there. You must accept Jesus as your only saviour, as said in the book of Ephesians 2.8-9:

“God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.”

Unfortunately, not believing in Jesus' death and resurrection, though you do good things, won’t save you, as many believe.

Probably you don’t believe this and think it’s gibberish. If I’m the wrong one, at least I lived my life to its full, but if you’re the wrong? Take some time and think about it.

Also, remember to not only say “I love you” but also show in your actions. “May the wind carry you home”.

(SMS) John Steel & Blaze Bayley - Change

[Verse 1]
All your life will stay the way it is today
If you live the way you have always lived your life like now.
If you want something change you've got to look inside your self
You have got to find a way to start the change.

[Chorus]
Time to change the world
Time to change the world

[Verse 2]
Will you let them hold you back because your scared of what they say
Or will you make your whole life your own
Open up the door yourself or kick it down without their help
God helps those who help themselves to change

[Chorus]
Time to change the world
Time to change the world

[Verse 1]
[Chorus]

Listening to music was always a hobby. Since early age I’m sticking into what refers to music. I get in love easily, mainly for the melody that is behind. But what really makes me like a song besides melody, and makes me enthralled by it, is the combination with the lyrics.

I’ve been listening to Blaze Bayley albums these last weeks. He was the main singer in the albums “The X Factor” and “Virtual XI” from Iron Maiden, and with his merits or demerits by taking the vocals right after Bruce Dickinson departure, these two albums weren’t well received (I particularly like them a lot, though they are different from what Iron Maiden is). After leaving the band, Blaze is releasing his solo career, with highs and lows, but without the deserved success. Intelligent lyrics, talking from sci-fi to our inner struggles.

Tuning through the Spotify albums, I’ve got into a song that many parts caught my attention while sung. Looking after the lyrics, I couldn’t find, because curiously, it isn’t his song but from the Bulgarian band John Steel, which together they recorded an album (for me sounded like a regular one from Bayley’s discography). And, even not being his, it is noticeable the influence in the writing process.

It never made sense Blaze being part of Iron Maiden. His vocal range is very different from what Paul Di’Anno (Iron Maiden’s first singer) and Bruce Dickinson did. But he never stopped. He always tried his, even seeming improbable, and even being criticised by being “different”, he didn’t give up. He tried to change the world, at least his world. The “scar” of being a former Iron Maiden singer didn’t shake his fries, not even his wife and manager’s death in 2008, because of a brain haemorrhage. He may have thought about giving up, but he’s still changing the world. Last year he released a studio album and, this year, a live recorded in France.

To conclude, I want to point out a part that caught my attention the most: “God help those who help themselves to change”. I don’t understand people who think that by just asking God’s help they’ll have their problems solved, just like a lamp’s genius would do. God is really able to realise the miracle, but he doesn’t want us to be stagnant and comfortable in our state.

Do not stay the way you are today. Run after changing. Ask God’s and change the world.

(SMS) Demi Lovato - Warrior

[Verse 1]
This is a story that I have never told
I gotta get this off my chest to let it go
I need to take back the light inside you stole
You're a criminal, and you steal like you're a pro

[Pre-Chorus 1]
All the pain and the truth
I wear like a battle wound
So ashamed, so confused
I was broken and bruised

[Chorus]
Now I'm a warrior, now I've got thicker skin
I'm a warrior, I'm stronger than I've ever been
And my armour is made of steel, you can't get in
I'm a warrior, and you can never hurt me again

[Verse 2]
Out of the ashes, I'm burning like a fire
You can save your apologies, you're nothing but a liar
I've got shame, I've got scars, that I will never show
I'm a survivor, in more ways than you know

[Pre-Chorus 2]
'Cause all the pain and the truth
I wear like a battle wound
So ashamed, so confused
I'm not broken or bruised

[Chorus]
'Cause now I'm a warrior, now I've got thicker skin
I'm a warrior, I'm stronger than I've ever been
And my armour is made of steel, you can't get in
I'm a warrior, and you can never hurt me

[Bridge]
There's a part of me I can't get back
A little girl grew up too fast
All it took was once, I'll never be the same
Now I'm taking back my life today
Nothing left that you can say
'Cause you were never gonna take the blame anyway

[Chorus]
Now I'm a warrior, I've got thicker skin
I'm a warrior, I'm stronger than I've ever been
And my armour is made of steel, you can't get in
I'm a warrior, and you can never hurt me again

[Outro]
Oh, oh
Ooh, yeah, yeah
You can never hurt me... Again

Looking at the songs I've chosen lately to talk about, you probably noticed I'm a big fan of heavy metal, and this is making my girlfriend kind of "suffer" while she's with me, because she likes a lot pop songs (and I mock her because of it hahaha), but when she asked me to write about a pop song, I couldn't let her down. It won't be easy for me listening to it, but I'll give my best and try, because she always does the same when she's with me (I'm listening to DragonForce while I write this, and can't peek Demi's song now because she's near).

Hard times in our lives. We've all been through, and I doubt of any living person claiming that never felt it was difficult. Family? School? College? Career? Marriage? Life? We've all been scarred by something or someone, physical or psychologically.

While doing some research on the lyrics, I've stumbled into a fandom (a club of fans with same interest, and this case, Demi Lovato) mentioning this song talks about Demi Lovato's relationship with her father, that he scarred her mind and body. And having this trust issue with someone you should deeply love is hard. But all this pain made her stand her ground and strengthen her mind and soul. She's determined and understand that life can be tough, but she's able to survive, even the hardest moments.

Well, I myself had some situations in my life that scarred my mind and, later, helped me survive the struggle. My mind was stronger and I could go, not only through it, but also help others that were living something similar.

If there is one thing I disagree, though, is not giving all your strength to heal the relationship with someone that hurt you in the past. Try to forgive, first, your mind and your thoughts about him or her. If it is possible, try to have some chat. Well, songs speak to me, and that is one thing that I'm dealing with and am trying my hard to first forgive in my mind.

What is your armour made of? Are you stronger than you were? Are you able to forgive and open a new chance?

(SMS) Bruno Sutter - GrAttitude

[Verse]
He was a child
Raised in a rich family
Not as you
Not as me

Life isn't hard when you've got everything
But listen to this story

He became an ungrateful guy
Excuse me, thanks a lot
They were not his favourite words

But suddenly he has lost it all
Daddy went bust and suicided
A typical irony of our lives

[Pre Chorus]
A lonely soul to be rescued
Another chance to begin
Reboot yourself, start over
And learn from your mistakes

[Chorus]
Gratitude, great attitude
Always remember
Gratitude, great attitude
And never forget

[Bridge]
The doors were closed for him
Nobody cares when one falls
If one's a total tosser

No matter if you're poor
Or if you're rich
Respect people
Respect yourself
You are what you preach

[Pre Chorus]
A lonely soul to be rescued
Another chance to begin
Reboot yourself, start over
And learn from your mistakes

[Chorus]
Gratitude, great attitude
Always remember
Gratitude, great attitude
And never forget

Once I heard someone saying that this decade's word is gratitude, and that many of the self help books out there talk about gratitude as solution for most of the problems. I have to agree with this statement. People are ungrateful by the simplest things that go through and live in their daily basis. People which, by thinking they have more, be it in knowledge, finances or anything else, they can humiliate others and not be thankful. Is it really possible reach anywhere without any kind of gratitude?

Since our first breathe, even the food we have got in our tables, everything passed through something or someone. Someone we should be thankful for. Gratitude is the action of recognise or give acknowledgement for something good. I'm not telling gratitude won't make you superior and praiseworthy, but will turn you of easy and pleasant sociability, and it also makes your heart lightweight.

The nice part of gratitude is that there is no social class distinction. It's a simple gesture just like hugging. And as simple as hugging, being grateful can start right now: grateful for the air you breath, as natural as it can be or with the help of machines. Talking about need help, in the Bible we can find many examples of being thankful, e some of them are related to a context where, if we check the naked truth, it would be reasons to complain about. But God gives you a peace that goes beyond any human comprehension. And this I can talk about experiences I've been through.

Remember, people will think about you for what you do. The American poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson said "what you do speaks so loudly, I can’t hear what you’re saying". I've been watching this as a teacher, mainly, and noticing, as well, clearer in many examples pointed in the book "20 Golden Rules for Educating Children and Students", written by Augusto Cury (a fast-reading book full of learning). More action and less gibberish.

Be thankful and make the difference.

(SMS) Disturbed - The Light

[Verse 1]
Like an unsung melody
The truth is waiting there for you to find it
It's not a blight but a remedy
A clear reminder of how it began
Deep inside your memory
Turned away as you struggled to find it
You heard the call as you walked away
A voice of calm from within the silence
And for what seemed an eternity
You waited, hoping it would call out again
You heard the shadow reckoning
Then your fears seemed to keep you blinded
You held your guard as you walked away

[Chorus]
When you think all is forsaken
Listen to me now (all's not forsaken)
You need never feel broken again
Sometimes darkness
Can show you the light

[Verse 2]
An unforgivable tragedy
The answer isn't where you think you'd find it
Prepare yourself for the reckoning
For when your world seems to crumble again
Don't be afraid to turn away
You're the one who can redefine it
Don't let hope become a memory
Let the shadow permeate your mind and
Reveal the thoughts that were tucked away
So that the door can be opened again
Within your darkest memories
Lies the answer if you dare to find it
Don't let hope become a memory

[Chorus]
When you think all is forsaken
Listen to me now (all's not forsaken)
You need never feel broken again
Sometimes darkness
Can show you the light

[Bridge]
Sickening, weakening
Don't let another somber pariah consume your soul
You need strengthening, toughening
It takes an inner dark to rekindle the fire burning in you
Ignite the fire within you

[Chorus]
When you think all is forsaken
Listen to me now (all's not forsaken)
You need never feel broken again
Sometimes darkness
Can show you the light
Don't ignore
Listen to me now
You need never feel broken again
Sometimes darkness
Can show you the light

Have you ever felt abandoned? Have you ever felt that difficulties took away some opportunity and/or ability? Let me tell you something: you are not alone in this route. Many people, including me, have been through this situation. but there comes something that fascinates me, and expression that I have always seen in cartoons, mainly: the light at the end of the tunnel.
I remember when I was a kid, while travelling with my parents, eventually we’ve gone through tunnels. The first times I felt desperate and suffocated by darkness and intense noise that was inside. Seeing the light in the end brought me peace for getting rid of this strangle.

With our lives, thinking about different situations that suffocate us, it isn’t that different. There is always the moment we are strangled, where everything seems to lose any sense. It seems there is no end. Our ears get annoyed with too much noise. Darkness makes us lose the week. But, then, there comes the light at the end of the tunnel that relieves and brings hope.

Who showed me (and asked to read about this song), was my former student and today’s a friend, Lucas Marcelino (who is a designer that is getting a spot, you can check his work at www.lucasbm.com). By living with him, I’ve seen he’s been through many situations where seemed to have no solution at all, but in the end, all resolved. When he showed me, he emphasised the firefighter story, that you can see in the video clip, and how darkness in his life brought something good, the same way I saw happening to Lucas’ life, not the same way as the video, but something good.
Don’t let darkness strangle you. It may bring many good things. Know how to take advantage of situations. Hold on to God. He can bring light to your life.

(SMS) MxPx - You're on Fire

[Verse 1]
You're old enough to know it's not your fault
You're strong enough to face your darkest conflict
Now you've woken from your nightmare, and now you're fighting back
And nothing can survive when you attack

[Pre Chorus]
This road to healing, hurts more than anything

[Chorus]
Now that you're on fire, your voice is like the wind
Now that you're on fire, let life begin again
Now that you're on fire, a new day has begun
Now that you're on fire, you are like the sun

[Verse 2]
You've spent some time along this lonesome road
With no one waiting for you back at home
Just breaking hearts and living free and easy
Times have changed and now you're not alone

[Pre Chorus]
This road to healing, hurts more than anything

[Chorus]
Now that you're on fire, your voice is like the wind
Now that you're on fire, let life begin again
Now that you're on fire, a new day has begun
Now that you're on fire, you are like the sun

[Bridge]
More than anything I'd like to see
Better brighter days for you, for you and me

[Chorus]
Now that you're on fire, your voice is like the wind
Now that you're on fire, let life begin again
Now that you're on fire, a new day has begun
Now that you're on fire, you are like the sun

Now that you're on fire

Life... How hard life can it be. I’m not that young boy anymore. I’m living my 26 years old. I may be young, and also living some sort of wild and free life, but I’m mature enough to know that time heals. It doesn’t matter how hard things can be, time heals whatever happens to you.

Sometimes you are so hurt that you even forget to forgive yourself. I’ve lived, not so long ago, a situation I was putting myself down because I forgave one person for what it had done to me, but I didn’t forgive myself. I was always thinking “what could have I done differently?”, instead of putting a stone over it, changing my mind and carrying on. It took me about 2-3 months to make this happen, and when I did it, I felt ten thousand times lighter. I could live along with all people around me in a better way.

I once wrote about forgiveness, which is also the name of the song sung by Joey Landreth. You can check it on another post here

And remember, when you wake up from this lonesome you’ll see everything new. You’ll get to higher places. You’ll have brighter days for you. Your social interaction will be even more lighter.
