(SMS) The Bros. Landreth - Salvation Bound

[Verse 1]
Bend till ya break
You spend a little more than you make
The cross is real, your seat is safe
You are the product of a broken one
Nobody knows just where you're coming from

[Verse 2]
You swear it’s not that bad
But you’ve lost everything that you have
How far can it go?
The fridge is empty and the bills piled up
And there’s nothing left for giving up

[Chorus]
Pick your heart up and leave this town
There’s a million bad reasons to just stick around
Join the chorus of the lost and the found
All together now salvation bound

[Verse 3]
You’re praying for heaven's sake
You give a little more than you can take
Eyes slammed shut, wide awake
You are lost and you feel undone
The loneliest of the lonesome ones

[Chorus]

[Verse 4]
You can’t bring ‘em back
Those that are gone, they are just gone, that’s just that
Dusty photographs, a tired ball cap
And crooked old songs sung out of time
All of the love that just gets left behind

[Chorus]

Landreth.... This surname has  already been here once in the blog. It was with brother Joey, in his solo career, and with the song Forgiveness. Now it's the two brothers together, Joey and Dave, under the alias The Bros. Landreth. Both the songs Forgiveness and this one were requested by my cousin, and also the blog's proofreader, Vinícius Duarte.

News of war. News of economic crisis. News of death. We're living dark times where the good news are rare or veiled. There is always someone from the very top in the corporate world blaming the others and nobody takes the responsibility on, while the working classes are taking blow after blow. Some still have better financial conditions and are able to hold up longer, however some others fight day in day out for something to eat.

Wages and working hours are being reduced, the bills are piling up, people warding and there's a question hanging in the air: what's left for me now? Some people I hang out with are going through the situation of being unemployed! For better or for worse we are not alone. The global recession in 2020 is clearly visible. The political crisis can be seen in many countries.

But there is a solution for all of this. Even though it isn't a solution that will bring back all the lost lives or that will restore the jobs and bring money back to people. We live so independently and focused only in our ego that we forget about the Cross brought salvation. The Cross brings hope for a better future. It is something curious that many think that a Christian's life is full of tranquility, peace and even financial prosperity. In some cases it might be true, but generally it's just as trouble as anyone else's life.

The tranquility, peace and prosperity happens in the spirit, that understands that, after all, God is caring and guiding. Obviously we can't simply give our lives to luck itself and let everything be solved by its own way, but we can have the security that, even though I can't do it on my own, God is caring and I need is to trust.

It comes to my mind the prodigal son's tale told by Jesus and I draw a parallel with our current state. In our wish of independence and not wanting to trust in Him, we may have some fun and "freedom" moments, but soon the crisis come and they put us down. The only one who can sustain us is God and, when we return ourselves to Him, recognising total dependence, He cares and gives us the best.

The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything. “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. “But his father said to the servants, ‘Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet. And kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.’ So the party began.

 Luke 15:16,20-24

We are not of this world. We can't get attached to it. The focus must be on Eternity. Even though we sing out of time, be it a song of life and hope, because we are all doomed if we attach ourselves to what is earthly, but we will be found and saved if we look to the Cross.

(Albums Recommendation) NYVES - Anxiety [2015]

There are some artists I like following in everything they do in and out of music. One of them is Ryan Clark, mostly known for doing lead vocals on the Christian metal band Demon Hunter. Besides that he's also a high level graphic designer. While following his works, it pops me out, between 2014 and 2015, he was getting involved in a project with another musician, Randy Torres (ex- Project 86), to release an electronic project. Knowing Demon Hunter and Clark's drawings, even being hard to picture him in an electronic/industrial project, both main projects of them have never been strangers to electronic components, it got me pumped out for real.

About the project itself, Ryan Clark was responsible for the vocals and compositions, while Randy Torres by the musical production. Don't expect any "harsh" vocals. Ryan Clark uses all of his clean vocals, which is as beautiful and excellent as the other. It is possible to identify inspiration from famous groups like Depeche Mode, New Order and even Nine Inch Nails in NYVES's tones. Also the minimalism in the album cover is fascinating!

One of the things that I like the most in Ryan Clark's approach to song writing is how he creates his lyrics. Sometimes it's so clear and direct, and, most of the time, it makes you think of what possible analogy he could be using. Reading slowly and knowing that both Clark and Torres are Christian, the meaning of some lyrics become clearer.

In this mix of original, inspirational bands, genres and melodies, the songs I like the most are:
  • Return
  • Something Divine
  • Parasites
  • The Exit
  • Idle Thoughts
  • Light

Even though it is an electronic/industrial music project, don't expect it to be a dancing album. It is a little bit sombre, reflexive and sensible, although this doesn't take a single slice of its excellence.

K7 #010 - Jesus: the ultimate rockstar

If there is something I'm not ashamed of saying loud and clear is that I'm Christian. I believe in Jesus, that is God, that He was sent to the world, became flesh, lived among men, died, resurrected and will return one last time. I hope this is the reflex of my life.

Christian bands have this incorporated in their lyrics and lifestyle, though some create this imagery of being Christian. But there are some artists that aren't self-proclaimed Christians, though their own faith lean towards this side, and at some point they might write songs on this subject. They talk about their cry for help, the perspective of how they see the Divinity, or even messages that are so positive as we expect from Christian bands.

Today's playlist just deal with that: the figure of God/Jesus in non-Christian bands/artists in/by a clear or implied way.

(SMS) Luke Easter - Sleep

[Verse 1]
Another day gone
One less to get through
Another chance to obsess
Another chance to second guess
Another chance to question your every thought
To blame yourself for whatever’s wrong

[Chorus]
I pray you find peace
Sleep
Don’t hold on so tight
I pray you find peace
Sleep
Leave the past to die

[Verse 2]
Another day gone
Another night beckons
Another chance to rest
Another chance to disconnect
Another chance to learn how to let things go
To accept what you cannot control

[Chorus]
I pray you find peace
Sleep
Don’t hold on so tight
I pray you find peace
Sleep
Leave the past to die

[Post Chorus]
Tomorrow may well be
A replay of today
But for now, find peace
Sleep

[Bridge]
Sometimes truth can be found in reflection
Life is wasted without introspection
Tell me, what is the point of obsession
Over things you can never, never, never change?

I pray you find peace
I pray you find peace
Sleep

[Chorus]
I pray you find peace
Sleep
Don’t hold on so tight
I pray you find peace
Sleep
Leave the past to die

[Post Chorus]
Tomorrow may well be
A replay of today
But for now, find peace
But for now, find peace
But for now, find peace
Sleep

According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary peace is a state of tranquillity or quiet. Finding peace was never easy. I won't talk about wars that happened or are happening in our world, or even this COVID-19 pandemic. This goes beyond what we can put our flesh and blood hands on. I'm talking about our inner state. Our inner peace.

What does disturb your peace? Is it your job? Your neighbour? Your family? Each one of us have our own problems to face it, and when we worry more than necessary about it, we lose our peace. A single event can disturb our inner state and even steal our sleep.

We deal with people putting pressure on us, telling it's gibberish or nonsense. Only we know what we are really facing. Sometimes we can overcome, sometimes we cannot. We sometimes can't even see the end of the day. We feel like drowning, but that is not the end. As I usually comment on songs here on the blog, there are people who support us, who are by our side helping in the most difficult moments. Don't give up on them. They are the ones praying for you to find peace. They are the ones walking side to side, even in silence, sometimes.

Find some time to rest, to disconnect. Learn to let go. Tomorrow is a different day, maybe a replay of today, but for now, find peace. Sleep.

'Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.' Philippians 4:6-7

(Albums Recommendation) TOOL - Fear Inocolum [2019]

Since their very first albums, Tool were a band that always brought some suspense to their songs. In the album Fear Inocolum wasn't different at all. All this tension is also due to the fact that the band hadn't released anything new for 13 years since the album 10,000 Days from 2006, though some live concerts happened in his half-time.

As I've recently watched pastor Rob reacting to the song Pneuma, I'll make a small adaptation in something he said: it is an album of patience. The syllables are pronounced slowly, almost in pauses, the atmosphere prepared to divide the parts (verses, chorus, bridges, interludes) is very well built and in a way you can notice the changes, while the same time there is some sort of suspension when are these divisions, beginnings or endings are going to happen. With the unusual metric and odd time signatures the band usually use, this tension increases.

It's a musical trip worthy every second. Between the sung songs, there are some instrumental, generating expectation of what is coming next.

From the word "inocolum" in the album's title we get the word inoculate. Inoculate means inserting in the organism, normally a pathogen, so this organism can produce antibodies/protection against it and, as an example of it, we have the flu vaccines. In this album's case, injecting fear so we may become immune to it.

The album's lyrics don't stray from this, bringing philosophical and political questions, and even the human survival before the chaos and submission.

In all of this, I highlight as my favourite songs:

  • Fear Inocolum
  • Pneuma
  • Invincible
  • Descending
  • 7tempest

It won't be the most hectic album, since the songs are embraced in suspense, but also don't expect a soothing melody, because it waits you lowering your defences to scare you with a heavier melody.

An interesting curiosity about Fear Inocolum is that, in its release, it hit the 1st place in sales (physical and digital), as the streaming platforms registered high plays, overcoming the albums Lover (Taylor Swift) and Normal F***ing Rockwell (Lana del Rey), and also all other five Tool's albums, that were put in the streaming platforms a week before Fear Inocolum, dug a spot in among the top 20 in Billboard 200. Definitely it isn't a deed for many.

K7 #009 - Better Days

We're all living gloomy days and full of worries around world. It's an invisible being to our eyes, though lethal. I understand other diseases have the same or even higher mortality rates, although what makes this new enemy so dangerous is the speed it spreads and its behaviour and mutation, which is different from others we know.

Some measures were taken and took our lives out of routine and let us, possibly, uncertain and insecure. I'm glad there are still people who are facing this problem so the calamity can be lower than the predictions. My gratitude goes to the healthcare area, the drugstores, grocery stores, truckers, public security, governors, and all other helping hands, even if I forgot to mention any. You have been working hard so the curve of infected and deceased could be lowered.

Although the future can make us feel uncertain, insecure or even pessimist, we can also hold onto hope and try to think positively, since there's no level of alienation. I've written about it in my virtual (almost) daily journal (it's written in Portuguese). This isolation can create some distress and start intrigues, but now is the moment to strengthen together and put aside our differences.

These songs today bring a message of hope. A message about hoping for a better day, regardless the fact it may not be easy.
