K7 #020 Einar Solberg

To create music it requires a creative mind. With a creative mind, the songwriter imagines the whole process and then decides to record as a one-man band (playing all the instruments) or with some people. After this, we usually have a new band. Sometimes when there's a desire to implement something different that another band has, a member is invited to use their talent, and with this we have a "featured" song.

Today I'm bringing to Building A Memory someone who has his own band and has been featured in other bands. Einar Solberg comes from Norway. He is a singer and keyboardist. He's known for being the lead singer in his band, Leprous.

His tone is melancholic and powerful. It touches you in the soul. He's got very unique way of singing. He used to do some harsh vocals as well, but the last time he applied this technique in a recording was in 2016, present in today's playlist.

As I said in the first paragraph, from time to time someone contributes with its talent in another band to bring something different. It wasn't different with Einar Solberg. Alongside his band, he's been featured in many other artists' songs, mainly the projects of his brother-in-law, Ihsahn, who is known for his long-time running work with the band Emperor since the beginning of the 90s, and as a musical producer.

So here are 2 songs of his band, Leprous, and 7 songs he's featured in as a singer.

(SMS) Iron Maiden - Reach Out

[Verse 1]

It's over your head

And you don't seem to understand

One word I say

And you can't live your life

Trying to run away

[Verse 2]

You're fighting your friends

Arguing everyone

But it never ends

You're wearing me out

[Chorus]

Come on

Reach out (reach out)

And let someone into your life

[Verse 3]

Don't get me wrong

You always apologise

It's just your way

Of making a scene

You need to be loved

It's not such a crime

[Chorus]

[Guitar Solo]

[Verse 4]

Over your head

You just don't seem to understand

One word I say

And you can't live your life

You got so much love

It's burning inside

[Chorus]

This year, at the school I work at, we've got a new English teacher and, to my great surprise, he is a metal music fan and also a former singer of a thrash metal band. His name's Yann and he became a great friend of mine. One of these days we were discussing about some songs that have changed our lives for good and he mentioned the song "Reach Out" by Iron Maiden and even put a side note that he listened to God calling him to "reach out". I didn't recall listening to this song before, although I have visited the Maiden's main discography many times, and the reason is because this song is a B-side (a song put together with a main single and is not too relevant for the main album concept) and I haven't listened to Maiden's B-sides. Wow! What an incredible song.

We have a life cycle: to be born, grow up, reproduce, get old, and die. But what happens during the in-betweens of it is different for each person. I already mentioned something similar to this in the song "Sing" by the band "I Am Empire". We meet people and try to develop our relationships. Sometimes we get along well, and sometimes we don't. Some of them during this process help us to live and some try to drown us.

Trusting someone can be difficult, even more if you had been betrayed before. Understanding the motive of betrayal usually gets you to nowhere. But there will always be with his arms wide open to you. Someone who gives unconditional love, not mattering what you have done in your life. This person understands your real intentions and makes your heart burn inside from the care He gives. I'm talking about Jesus. He's the one who is ready to forgive and will always love you, regardless of the situation. He was sent from his throne to bring forgiveness and love, and to connect us once again to God.

"For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him."

John 3:16-17

Just as the song says in the chorus: reach out and let someone into your life. Let God be part of the daily basis and feel that you are understood, loved and cared about.

PS: unfortunately this song isn't available in the most common streaming platforms, only in YouTube.

(Albums Recommendations) Michael Jackson - Off The Wall [1979]

Michael boy... it took me a while to fully appreciate his works. Unfortunately it happened after his passing away. Of course I knew some songs that I really liked, though only momentarily. But the point that everything changed was when his documentary This Is It (2009) was broadcasted in 2011 in an open transmission channel. I was amazed by how he cared about the songs and their perfect execution. After that moment I decided to dive into his discography.

I can say I had an excellent start by buying the album I'm talking about today: Off the Wall. It was a discount day at the shop I was in and I paid only R$7 (nearly €1 / £1 / US$2). The moment I got home and put it in my laptop to listen to, my head blew away. Everything was so well produced and ahead of its time. If I didn't know it was from the 70s, I'd say it was something from the 80s or even the 90s because of the quality. Of course the main genre in the album leads directly to the 70s, but once again, I mention the spectacular quality!

For me a good album must have a good starting song, and with this album is not different. "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough" had its fame days and it's a contagious song. It even was the main theme of "Video Show", a Brazilian TV programme, for some time. The instrumentation here are of high level as well. Someone taking its first steps into music won't be able to perform them immediately, for the arrangements present in the songs demands some time of studying and improvement. The riffs are remarkable and will get stuck in your head (you'll notice yourself humming some of them).

Every song here is worth having a spot as the best of all time. It's not a coincidence that Michael Jackson was entitled as The King of Pop. And the ones that I like the most (I'm trying to not choose them all), as they are played, are:

• Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough

• Rock With You

• Workin' Day And Night

• Get On The Floor

• Off The Wall

• It's The Falling In Love

• Burn This Disco Out

Let the rhythm flow through your veins and permit yourself getting on the dance floor.

K7 #019 - Go, Brazil!

Last Monday (September 7), here in Brazil, we had one of our major holidays: the Independence Day. Though surrounded with some controversies, we no longer need to pay tributes to Portugal, but this is something to be discussed in another topic.

For this week I want to honour my country by choosing bands that are from here and sing in Portuguese! I know I have already made a playlist similar to this subject, but differently, it won't be only "deboinha" as the other.

So, here are some Brazilian bands that rock!

(SMS) Time, the Valuator - Vibrant

[Intro]

Rise and shine
From a blighted state of mind
Shaped by obsolete regrets
A scenery unfolds

[Verse 1]

All you can see is just a faded saturation
In a city full of vibrant colors
A mindless sight in black and white
Let it illuminate
I am fading into concrete
With time invalidated
It devours the flame
That keeps me from turning soulless, mindless

[Chorus]

I am alive
With every breath I take, I regain energy
I am floating and this
Gravity won't pull me back
I am alive
And I feel it in my blood
So I am baring my bones
In newfound certainty

[Verse 2]

I have to redefine myself
I have to redefine

[Chorus]

[Bridge]

I am fading into concrete
With time invalidated, invalidated

[Outro]

I am not soulless, mindless
Soulless, mindless
I had to redefine myself
With every step I take
I find my way back home

Have you ever felt you are alive just to fill an empty space? Have you ever felt your wish for living faded away? You are not the only one and, gladly, because many felt the same way and overcame, there are many to help you through these dark days. Help can come from Psychology/Psychiatric professionals, songs like this I'm writing about or that one from Bloodywood I've already written about before. And I can't go through this without mentioning close friends who walk along helping in every time of need.

I know life isn't easy and we can get disappointed even with a trustable one betraying our feelings. Since the moment the first man and woman brought the sin to Earth, people hurt each other. Some might say derogatory words about who we are, or behave in an evil way towards us. Even Jesus didn't escape from treason.

When we experience this, there's a chance of falling into depression. Depression is a disorder that affects our state of mind which keeps on putting us down and giving space to negative thoughts, fading out all vibrant colours of life. Life isn't meant to be lived that way. Life is the sign of energy, certainty of a different future and hope.

Depression and mean people may say you're soulless and/or mindless, but who do you say who you are? What does God say about who you are?

The Bible shows some interesting points of what God says about us. I can name: God's work (Genesis 1:27), created in a special way (Psalms 139:14), loved by God (1 John 4:10), known by God (Psalms 139:1-3), created with a purpose (Jeremiah 29:11), unique and complex (Ephesians 2:10)... and many other qualities.

Getting out of depression takes effort and demands slow steps. It isn't something that disappears at the snap of a finger, it's gradual. Expose yourself to life. Don't let this negative gravity pull you down. It's time to redefine and let God change your heart and heal your soul!

"Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray. Are any of you happy? You should sing praises." James 5:13

(Albums Recommendations) DC Talk - Free At Last [1992]

There are some albums that follow us everywhere we go. Some of them you first listened to a long time ago and, when you give it another a look, it feels as great as the first experience. This is what DC Talk's Free At Last means to me.

The first time I've heard of them was sometime between 2001 and 2002. My brother was part of a youth group at the local church where they played "different" songs than we were used to hear during church's services. It was a mix of rap/hip-hop and rock. The only thing I knew about this album was only an unofficial recording that was labelled in Portuguese as "dois homens de branco e um de preto" (two men in white and one in black). The song that mostly played while at home was "Say The Words", because it was relevant for whatever this youth group was doing, and that's the first one I remember listening of them.

Not much time after these events I mentioned, I discovered it was the album Free At Last by DC Talk. The album is their third release. Not differently from their debut album, in 1989, they made some difference in churches as a whole, by being "indecent" for the traditional and "interesting" for the young.

The band consists, mainly, of three guys that, as ironically as the label I remember from the album, are two white men and a negro (there's a song in this album similarly named to this). They are Toby Mac, Michael Tait and Kevin Max. Each one of them have a different style in music and, while together, they made something unique and interesting of listening to. All of them followed different careers in music after the band was put in hiatus, at first as solo artists. The only one who really had a big name in solo career was Toby Mac. Michael Tait (who had the shortest solo career of them) is heavily remembered by being Newsboys' current singer, and Kevin Max by being the lead singer in Audio Adrenaline's album King and Queens (2013), although his solo career is also promising.

This album was named after the conclusion of Martin Luther King's most famous speech "I Have A Dream", which is sampled at some point in the song of same name. As mentioned earlier, the three guys in this band have different influences in music and it's noticeable while listening the nearly 1-hour-long album (or over than an hour if we listen to the 10th anniversary edition), with some songs flirting more with rock, others being more hip-hoppy and some more chilling. Imagining this blend without listening seems very odd, but the final result is incredible and, as I also said before, unique. The rhythm is contagious and invites you to dance. Well, some churches that have dance groups used to use some of this band's songs because of the beat and the message they were singing.

The album also had some prizes and recognition like the Best Rock Gospel Album at the Grammy Awards in its 36th festival (1993), three songs winning the Dove Awards in the 24th (1993) and 25th (1994) editions of the Dove Awards, and the #9 position in The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music by the CCM Magazine in 2001.

The songs I like the most, as they are played in the album, are:

  •  Luv Is A Verb
  • Jesus Is Just Alright (originally by The Doobie Brothers)
  • Say The Words
  • Socially Acceptable
  • Free At Last
  • Time Is...
  • The Hardway
  • Lean On Me (originally by Bill Withers)
  • Word 2 The Father

Christian albums can mix lots of genres, be excellent and even defy the "traditional" songs.
